“Kaitland? It’s me, Elizabeth. Can I come in?”

Kaitland quickly wiped the tears from her face before opening the bathroom door. “Are the children awake?”

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. “Do you really think I’m going to be distracted that easily? You know why I’ve come here. Rand and I almost had a cow when Max shouted downstairs. He never shouts. His voice just gets low and his eyes narrow when he’s angry.”

“Not this time.”

“I know a woman in distress when I see one. That’s why I came up to check on you when I saw you tear up the stairs.”

Kaitland felt tears coming again. “Thank you, but there’s nothing you can do.”

Elizabeth grabbed her arm and dragged her over to the sofa. “Usually with my patients I tell jokes. Wanna hear one?”

“I don’t think I’m exactly in a mood for a joke,” she replied, the tears still sounding obvious in her voice.

“Then that’s just the time you need it,” Elizabeth said, then, “So, how many Stevens brothers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?”

Kaitland shook her head. “I don’t know. Two?”

Elizabeth smiled. “Are you kidding? They’re too thickheaded to realize they can do it themselves. They get a servant to do it”

Kaitland did smile. “That’s awful.”

“Well, those men can be pretty awful sometimes, too. I swear, there are times I’d like to hit Rand with a two-by-four…several times.”

Kaitland laughed. “I know. Max is so stubborn. I thought he’d forgotten…” Her voice trailed off.

“What?”

Kaitland sighed. “You know Max and I were engaged to be married. It was a great time. We were so in love. I admit I was naive, a little awed by all of this.” She swept her hand around the room. “Even my brother tried to convince me I wasn’t in love with Max. But I was, very in love, despite how shy I was over the media attention and Max’s money. And I thought he was in love with me.”

She sighed again, her shoulders sagging as she remembered.

“My brother is a user,” Kaitland continued. “Actually, he isn’t really my brother. He’s my stepbrother, as he will point out, but to me he’s flesh and blood. When we were small, my mom married his dad. They died in an auto accident not too long afterward. We had nowhere to go, so my grandmother raised us both. Robert always felt like the outsider, claiming he didn’t belong.”

“And you felt guilty for that,” Elizabeth concluded.

“Just a little. I love him. He had no family left after our parents died…except me. And he and my grandmother didn’t get along. Anyway, he’s gotten involved in lobbying and attends huge balls and fancy dinners. I’m very uncomfortable at these functions…you aren’t going to discuss this with anyone, are you?” she suddenly asked, wringing her hands.

“Of course not!” Elizabeth said. “What you say won’t leave this room. Gossip is a very distasteful thing.”

Kaitland felt the trembling start deep down in her soul as she began to explain.

“I went to a party one night that my brother begged me to attend.
